The Serpent Vision
The Serpent Vision
This painting is inspired by a carving of the Mayan vision serpent.
The serpent was a very important social and religious symbol, revered by the Maya. Maya mythology describes serpents as being the vehicles by which celestial bodies, such as the sun and stars, cross the heavens. The shedding of their skin made them a symbol of rebirth and renewal.
The Vision Serpent is thought to be the most important of the Maya serpents. "It was usually bearded and had a rounded snout. It was also often depicted as having two heads or with the spirit of a god or ancestor emerging from its jaws." The ancestor or god who was being contacted was depicted as emerging from the serpent's mouth. The vision serpent thus came to be the method in which ancestors or gods manifested themselves to the Maya. Thus for them, the Vision Serpent was a direct link between the spirit realm of the gods and the physical world.
A hexagon is often interpreted as a symbol of balance, harmony, and unity, representing the integration of opposing forces and the connection between the spiritual and material realms, largely due to its symmetrical structure and frequent appearance in nature, like in honeycombs, which are made up of hexagonal cells; it is also sometimes linked to the heart chakra, signifying love and compassion.
The Flower of Life is based on sacred geometry, an ancient study of geometric shapes and their spiritual significance and allows a deeper understanding of the universe's structure. In spirituality, the Flower of Life symbol represents the interconnectedness of all life, signifying the cycle of creation and the unity of everything within the universe, often interpreted as a blueprint for life with its geometric pattern reflecting the fundamental structures of existence from atoms to planets; it is seen as a tool for meditation and connecting with one's higher self, promoting spiritual awakening and healing energy. The overlapping circles symbolize the continuous process of creation, where all life originates from a single source, representing the interconnectedness of all things. Many use the Flower of Life for meditation, believing it can facilitate connection with higher consciousness and promote personal spiritual development
